The History and Archaeology Museum from Piatra Neamt was founded in 1934 by Constantin Mătasa, receiving the title The Regional Museum of Archaeology. After 1960’s it was called The Archaeological Museum Piatra Neamt, from 1970’ s Piatra Neamt County Museum of History, and from 1978’s The Museum of History Piatra Neamt, and finally starting with 1991 it received the title that reflects the real specific of the museum: The History and Archaeology Museum from Piatra Neamt.

The permanent exhibition of the museum, the second achievement of this kind in Romania after 1989, was completed on 25 November 2008. Gathering three-dimensional pieces of an extremely scientifically and estethical value, The Museum of History and Archaeology Piatra Neamt is the owner of the biggest collection of Neo-eneolithical Art from South-Est Europe. It has 24 exhibition halls arranged on 2 floors. The 24 halls were opened to the public on 27 Novemebr 2008, on the occasion of the Scientific Session dedicated to celebrating 90 years since the formation of Greater Romania. They contain permanent exhibition that provides an convincing picture of the past of human communities, who lived on those lands, starting with the Superior Paleolithic until the Contemporary Era, the Numismatic Cabinet, Constantin Mătase’s Exhibition and the Hall of the Temporary Exhibitons, helping with numerous materials and information to the knowledge of the past of the County. In this manner are presented in different fases of evolution Stârcevo-Criş Culture, Linear Ceramic Culture, Precucuteni Culture, Cucuteni Culture, New Culture, Costişa Culture, Carpic Culture, Sântana of Mureş Culture, Geto-Dacians Civilization, Subcarpathians Tumuli Culture, Dridu Civilization having all specific objects, various pieces of bone, stone, bronze, amphoras, vases, ornaments, ingots, coins, discovered on the territory of our County. Among the pieces of an exceptional value we can list the Council of Goddessed (Soborul Zeiţelor), Dance from Frumuşica (Hora de la frumuşica), the Vase from Izvoare – Piatra-Neamt (Vasul cu colonete de la Izvoare – Piatra-Neamt), Treasure of Rădeni (Tezaurul de la Rădeni). They are also illustrated the first documentary indications of settlements from the 14th to 16th century, significant aspects of the economic social and cultural evolution of Neamţ County during the early middle ages, the beginnings of the modern age, development of economic, social, cultural, urban and rural communities in the 19th and 20th century. The participation of the inhabitants of the Revolution of 1848, War of independence, World War I, the Great Union of 1918, World War II, it is evidenced by the numerous documents, photographs, weapons, medals and antiques.

Using a modern and diverse range of complementary materials, presentation and information of certain scientific invoice, the Permanent Exhibition of the History and Archaeology Museum, registeres among the achievements of the Romanian Museography from the last decades.
