LE DRAKKAR Pub & Creperie Bucharest

Le Drakkar-The new place for ancient Vikings!

Even in the present, after 1200 years, Vikings impress people around the world.  The ships they built, called Drakkars(after the carved dragons on the bow) were famous for their sailing speed and for the easiness with which they were docked.  Using wind power or pulling the oars heroically, the Vikings have crossed the seas and oceans.

With their strong arms, the Nordic sailors could move the ship with a speed of 5 knots. Their ships could sail in shallow water, as well. In order to avoid underwater rocks, they had a man trained especially for spotting them. The sails were made from sheepskins sewn skillfully.

The bow of the ships was decorated with a dragon. On a stormy day, they could remove the mast and use the big sail for shelter.

During daytime they used the Sun to navigate and by nighttime the stars. They were not familiar with the compass, but even so, Red Eric discovered Greenland and his son, Leif, reached the shores of today’s Canada. With a good wind, they could sail with a speed of 12 knots.

The Vikings were not a peaceful nation, but neither were their times. They attacked, robbed and plundered all ships that crossed their way. At their return home, they would jump on their oars and then lift them at the entrance in the port where everybody would expect them.
